Big Brands to Support/Not Support

Support:

Patagonia

Patagonia is one of the leading big brands in sustainability. 68% of their products are made from recycled materials, such as plastic bottles, and 100% of the cotton they grow for their clothes is grown organically. They are on their way to reach a goal of 100% renewable or recycled materials by 2025. Another great thing about Patagonia, is that they give at least 1% of all their earnings each year to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. This may seem like a small number, but it has added up and they have donated more than 100 million dollars.

Lush cosmetics

Lush is a great brand to shop at. They are cruelty free and fight animal testing and are 100% vegetarian. They aren’t completely zero waste, but are making efforts in that direction. For example they sell shampoo and conditioner bars, without any plastic packaging.

Veja

Veja is a sneakers brand based in France, and they are a good place to shop at. They use mainly eco-friendly materials, and reduce the amount of water needed in production. Another great thing about Veje is that they are completely transparent about their emissions, working conditions, where they get their materials to make their product, and so on.

Do Not Support:

Nestle

Nestle is a huge company that owns many other brands. Nestle uses child labor usually kids of age 12-15. The company releases a huge amount of carbon emissions, and is making no effort to do anything about it. One of the places they export water from is in a small town in Pakistan, and the locals don’t have a fresh source of water. Nestle has also had a history with mislabeling products, and making them out to be much more healthy than they actually are. To read more about this, click the link:

H&M

H&M is a culprit of greenwashing, which means they advertise to make themself look more sustainable then they actually are, instead of actually working to be more sustainable. One specific example, is their “Conscious Collection” where they use more sustainable materials. But what they do, is blend the sustainable fabric with cheap fabrics to keep prices low. Fabric blends can’t be recycled, so it contradicts the whole idea of being sustainable and recycling.
